Nestled in the heart of Austin, Judges Hill is one of downtown’s oldest surviving residential neighborhoods — a lasting connection to the city’s earliest days.
Established in 1851, Judges Hill is a time capsule of historic architecture. The proposed district has one of the highest concentrations of historically designated properties.
History
Established in the mid-19th century, Judges Hill developed into a residential district that became home to many of Austin's prominent legal professionals, architects, & university-affiliated individuals. The neighborhood's extant structures display a chronological progression of architectural styles, encompassing Victorian, Classical Revival, and mid-century modern designs, reflecting its sustained period of development from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. Historical records indicate instances of building relocations, significant social & civic functions hosted within its residences, & connections to the city's commercial and institutional growth, demonstrating the area's relevance to Austin's broader historical narrative.
Stewardship
Preserving the historic character of the proposed Judges Hill District protects the real stories of the people and the unique architecture that shaped Austin. Stewardship ensures that future generations can witness and appreciate this storied history—and learn from the legacy it leaves behind.

“Austin has always been known as a city of homes, but today it has come to a crossroads. We must plan growth or in the next 25 years, see the city become a congested, blighted commercial center.”
